As an Alexander Technique teacher I often have people
coming to me in discomfort, pain and with chronic conditions that have
not responded to treatment.
I am frequently told " My doctor says, I've got this," or "I've been
seeing my practitioner once a fortnight for many years". Clearly the
treatments are not working well, but why?
It would not be unreasonable for a doctor to suggest to a 40 a day
smoker with chronic bronchitis, to quit the habit, even though this may
be hard for them to do.
When it comes to the use of our bodily structures we also have very
string habits which are brought on through compensation to injuries,
illness, dealing with emotional stress and repetitive habits which have
developed at school, work and play such as using a computer, driving,
exercising and sport.
The difference between bodily use and smoking habits is that the smoker
knows that they are doing it. Habits of bodily misuse we accept as part
of life, our character, aging. If we notice them at all. It is more
likely that we will notice their effect in others rather than ourselves.
It is difficult to stay well when undetected tension patterns, pull the
body out of its natural alignment. This in turn requires more muscular
force to stay upright causing greater impact on the joints and
compression on the nerves. The increased muscle tension also affects
the 'space' in the body cavities restricting the organs, blood flow,
breathing and digestion.
So how do you combat these energy draining habit, the answer is really
easy. "Stop doing it"
Here the Alexander Technique helps and teaches us to recognise unwanted
habits that may hinder our ability to heal and finds a way to
re-educate the brain to direct a freer and more efficient use of our
bodily structures.
By acknowledging these habits of self- use and taking responsibility
for them, without guilt, using the Alexander Technique promotes
strength, pain relief, healing, good functioning and well being.
Best of all, we learn to do this all for ourselves !
" When you stop doing the thing that's wrong, the thing that's right
does itself ." *
